Why Framing The House is Perfect

It is a process of intricately joining together massive beams that impart a sense of stability and security. Timber framing is an iconic form of construction used throughout the centuries, providing breathtaking visual aesthetics. Common components in timber frame structures include joining mortise, tenon, housing, and pegs together to form connections.

Ancient language is still used today to describe the traditional craft of timber framing which has a long history throughout the world. Complete structures are made of  heavy timber vertical posts supporting horizontal beams. Cross-sections called bents create bays. Braces and struts provide support to the frame. The difference between timber framing and conventional construction is in the framing. Conventional houses are framed with smaller dimensional lumber and require additional construction of load-bearing walls.

A distinct characteristic of a timber frame is the unique method of joining timbers together. The ends of timbers are carved in order for them to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. A hole is drilled through both timbers to be joined and a wooden peg is forced into them to hold the joint together. A number of different joints are used, such as mortise and tenon, lap joint dovetail, tying joint, and scarf joint.

Timber framing is strong, so load-bearing walls are not necessary in the middle of the house. The design style provides open space configurations. Much of the framing remains exposed inside the structure and walls are typically built on the outside of the timber frame. Exterior finishes can include any type of building material. A timber frame home can be styled in any form from rustic to classic to contemporary.

Timber framing has taken on a revival, of sorts. Craftsmen have been bringing back the old methods of construction and incorporated them with modern technology. The exposed timbers, joinery, and open floor plans give timber frame homes a unique aesthetic, coupled with structural integrity and durability. Timber frame homes are also less resistant to burning. Timber framing provides a bold statement, and a perfect way to build a timeless house.
